Facial Recognition Technology and Use of Body Worn Cameras

Purpose of Collection

The Star Entertainment Group (TSEG) uses Facial Recognition Technology (FRT) and its Safety and Security Officers use Body Worn Cameras (BWC) to support its legitimate interests in maintaining a safe and secure environment for patrons, employees, and the broader community. These technologies are used for:

  • Preventing, detecting, and investigating security and safety incidents.

  • Enforcing legal and regulatory obligations, including mandatory and voluntary exclusions under applicable Casino Control Acts.

  • Supporting responsible gambling initiatives and harm minimisation strategies.

  • Identifying individuals subject to customer probity assessments or law enforcement directives.

  • Ensuring compliance with internal policies and procedures.

TSEG does not use BWC or FRT for marketing, advertising, behavioural profiling, or commercial purposes.

Types of Personal Information Collected

Depending on the context, the following types of personal information may be collected:

Facial Recognition Technology (FRT):

  • Facial images and biometric templates (mathematical faceprints).

Body Worn Cameras (BWC):

  • Audio and video recordings of interactions between Safety and Security Officers and individuals.

  • Sensitive information that may be incidentally captured (e.g., racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, health information).

  • Government-issued identifiers (e.g., driver’s licence) if presented during an incident.

 

How We Collect Your Information

  • BWC footage is recorded by Safety and Security Officers during incidents or when positioned at designated entry points.

  • FRT captures facial images through surveillance cameras located at entry points and within designated areas of our properties.

  • Enrolled images in the FRT system may be sourced from:

    • CCTV footage.

    • Membership applications (e.g., The Star Club).

    • Law enforcement agencies.

    • Other casino operators.

    • Publicly available sources.

Legal Basis for Collection

TSEG collects and uses your personal and sensitive information in accordance with the:

  • Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs).

  • Casino Control Acts in New South Wales and Queensland and associated Internal Control Manuals (ICMs) that are approved by the respective Casino Regulators in New South Wales and Queensland.

  • Invasion of Privacy Act 1971 (Qld) (for audio recordings).

  • Other applicable laws and regulatory obligations.

Where required, TSEG relies on consent through clear signage and Conditions of Entry. In some cases, collection is authorised or required by law, and consent is not required.

Use and Disclosure of Information

Your personal information may be used or disclosed for the purposes outlined above. This includes:

  • Internal use by authorised personnel (e.g., Security, Surveillance, Compliance, Legal).

  • Disclosure to law enforcement, regulators, or legal representatives where required or authorised by law.

  • Disclosure to third-party service providers (e.g., technology vendors) under strict contractual obligations, including data sovereignty and security requirements.

TSEG does not sell or share your personal information for commercial gain.

Data Storage and Retention

All data is stored securely on TSEG’s systems located in Australia.

Security of Your Information

TSEG implements robust security measures to protect your personal information, including:

  • Role-based access controls.

  • Encryption of data at rest and in transit.

  • Secure physical and digital storage environments.

  • Regular audits, penetration testing, and system reviews.

  • Staff training on privacy, surveillance obligations, and data breach response.

Entry into a signed area constitutes implied consent to surveillance.
