The Star Sydney partners with Barnardos Australia
Published on 2 May 2016.
Sydney’s premier entertainment destination, The Star, is proud to announce a three year partnership with one of Australia’s leading child protection charities, Barnardos Australia.
To kick-off the partnership, The Star’s Executive Chef Uday Huja along with representatives from The Star’s management team visited Yurungai Learning Centre on Friday 29 April 2016. Uday taught over 15 children the secrets to creating the best Spaghetti Bolognese in town. Whilst speaking about the ingredients and the importance of a balanced and nutritious meal, the children created their own meatballs which were served up for a delicious ‘Spag Bol’ meal in the afternoon. To make the cooking even more fun and personal for the children, the children wore chef’s hats and serving gloves while they prepared their own meal.
Throughout the afternoon Uday and The Star’s team members took the time to help children with their homework and talked about the importance of going to school.
As a thank you for The Star’s support, the children presented a self-made painting to Chris Downy, The Star’s General Manager of External Affairs.
As a Principal Partner, The Star will donate $1.5 million to Barnardos over the course of the partnership to provide ongoing support for its services for abused children and disadvantaged children and families. The Star will also back key fundraising events and volunteer initiatives, encouraging their 4,000+ employees to get involved and support this important cause.
The Star Managing Director, Greg Hawkins, said: “We are exceptionally pleased to announce the new partnership with Barnardos Australia to help them to continue their vital work at the forefront of child protection across the country.”
“We relish the opportunity to make a difference to the community and look forward to providing unique opportunities for our employees to support Barnardos.”
The partnership will see The Star Sydney’s workforce engage further with the charity in a number of ways, from tradespeople donating their time and skills for building repairs at Barnardos centres, to staff and their families taking part in community running events such as the Barnardos Beach Bolt, or donating Christmas presents for children who would otherwise go without through the Barnardos Gifts for Kids program.
Barnardos Australia, CEO, Deirdre Cheers, said the partnership will help fund vital programs. “We are pleased to form this relationship with the Star Sydney, which will help ensure that abused children get the services they need and deserve. With over 40,000 children in child protection in Australia, and this number growing every year, this need is urgent and real.”
Effective immediately, the partnership with Barnardos Australia is one of The Star’s three ongoing charity partnerships, which include support of Taronga Conservation Society and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
