The Star Community Grants

The Star is proud to be part of the city of Sydney and especially be a good neighbour to our local community. We provide financial assistance to local organisations that play a vital role in our community and our team members are proud to offer their time and efforts in support of local charities.

The Star’s grants are for a specified project or purpose and are awarded to local, not-for-profit organisations which are planning an activity or project for the benefit of the local community. The approved grants must be spent on the approved project and be used within 12 months of grants approval. The Star provides grants of maximum $10,000.


ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Planning an activity or project for the benefit of the local community (within the 2007 and 2009 postcode areas)
  • Established community groups and not for profit within the local area (within the 2007 and 2009 postcode areas)
  • Workplaces or businesses that are planning activities that support the local community; and
  • Should be a legal entity with an ABN number, CFN number or incorporated association
  • Each application will be assessed against the following selection criteria

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Activity or project located within the local area (postcode 2007 and 2009) and must be conducted within the next 12 months;
  • Specifically targets the residents, workers or businesses of the 2007 and 2009 postcodes, which will be given first priority, or areas immediately adjacent to these areas where circumstances permit’
  • Clearly identifies and addresses community involvement
  • Directly benefits the community;
  • Detailed description of the event, activity or campaign including timeframes and an itemised budget; 
  • Assessment of past grants if applicable; and 
  • Only one application per organisation and project 

FAQ

How do I apply for funding?

All applications must be submitted through our online application form to be considered valid.

If my organisation has been previously awarded by The Star can we still apply?

Yes, you are eligible to apply. However first time applicants will be given priority.

What postcode should I list in the application form if my project is based in an area that is different to our organisation’s location?

The postcode you should enter should be the location of the target groups for your project that you are seeking to have funding for, not your organisation's office address. For example your organisation's office is in Sydney CBD but the target groups you are seeking funding for are located in Pyrmont, please put the postcode for Pyrmont in the application form.

Can I only apply for a grant?

In addition to the financial support the grant provides, we're also committed in providing a range of non-financial support services to help which The Star would normally charge a fee for. This may include, but is not limited to venue hire, room hire, equipment hire (e.g. audio visual) or work space. This support can be applied for at any time via community@star.com.au

How do I know The Star has received my application?

You will receive an acknowledgement email from The Star confirming that your application has been received.

How are grant applications assessed?

Eligible applications are first assessed against the selection criteria above. These assessments are then considered by the selection panel consisting of The Star’s Senior Management.

When will I find out if my grant application has been successful?

Grant recipients will be receiving a confirmation that includes a timeframe of the review process.

Please note that The Star cannot fund all eligible applicants as part of the Community Grant program. All applicants will be notified by email or mail (where no email address is given) of the assessment outcome.

Can I get feedback on my application if I am unsuccessful?

Yes, please send an email to community@star.com.au to request feedback on your application.

If successful in receiving a grant, how long do I have to spend the grant?

If successful, organisations need to spend the funding within 12 months of receiving the grant.

What happens if my grant application is successful?

Successful applicants must sign a grant agreement before payment is made. The grant agreement covers:

  • Use of funds for purposes outlined in the agreement only;
  • Any unspent money will be expended for charitable purposes within a reasonable time period;
  • Advertising and promotions requirements;
  • Reporting requirement;
  • Release The Star from any liability the organisation may incur in relation to the project; and
  • The provision of a summary or report of the use of funds after the event or purpose of activity has been completed.

What will I need to report when I receive a grant?

Grant recipients must report on their project or activity as detailed in the grant agreement, which will specify a timeframe for doing so. All successful projects will need to acknowledge the support of The Star, details of which will be specified in the grant agreement.
